The Avengers, Spider-Man, Thor, Hulk, Iron Man, the X-Men. Stan Lee was more than just a comic book writer – he was the living legend responsible who creating some of the world’s most recognisable superheroes. His contribution to the global pop culture landscape cannot be understated.

Many of his creations were first started through comic books, and through movies, more specifically those in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, that characters he created, like Iron Man, Thor, Spider-Man, and Hulk, spread into the mainstream consciousness.

Here are some of the reactions from Marvel Studios’ President Kevin Fiege and some of the actors who played characters he created (and some he did not, but helped make popular):

Downey was pulled form career limbo and went on to become one of the biggest stars in the world, thanks to Iron Man and the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe it started.

After years of trying, and fighting, and pushing, Reynolds got Deadpool on the screen and has been reaping the benefits, ever since. And he was sure to keep Stan Lee’s alive in both of those films.

Sebastian Stan went from obscurity to international superstardom with his role as the Winter Soldier.

Hugh Jackman and Fox’s X-Men franchise set the stage for the MCU’s global dominance.
