Have you guys heard about Miquela Sousa, better known as Lil Miquela? She’s just 19 y/o and has over 1.3 million followers. She is an Instagram influencer and is associated with several luxury brands. Oh! And yes, she is a ROBOT!

I just passed the nail salon where @saradecou and I used to go every weekend. Sara would get some crazy chrome / intergalactic edition from the gels and I stuck with my nude coffin-shaped nails 🤦🏽♀️. Some of my happiest memories are of me and her just getting our nails done and talking about whatever. It was a lot of her counseling through any problem I was having, just her being someone I could talk to, someone I thought I could trust. I still wonder why she didn’t think I could handle the truth: that I was created in a lab, a robot whose human memories were totally made up. We shared so much and had so many amazing projects planned. Passing the nail salon, I felt a lot of pain but it was a good pain almost. It was the kind of pain that tells me I’m growing. Despite everything I’m grateful for the times we had together, Sara. We shared too much for me not to.
She is a fictional character created by Trevor McFedries and Sara Decou as a part of their digital art project. She was programmed by Brud, an LA-based technology startup specializing in artificial intelligence and robotics. This virtual influencer is an outcome created by combining a robot with the personalities of two different Instagram personalities: Kartsinkle and Emily Baador.
At first glance, Miquela could understandably be mistaken for a living, breathing person. She seems to live a luxurious life that many women dream of. She wears real-life clothes, promotes brands and also supports a lot of noble causes towards the society. Besides advocating for LGBT rights she also encourages her followers to donate toward charity.
But she isn’t the only virtual influencer; there are few other computer-generated cyborgs too. We have Blawko and Bermuda created by the same company and Shudu created by Cameron-James Wilson. Shudu has even modeled for pop star Rihana’s makeup line. While Bermuda has 92.9k followers, Shudu and Blawko have more than 135k Instagram followers each.
