Meet Dan Maurer, a 40-year-old man who had an extremely uncommon medical condition. Dan’s scrotum had experienced uncontrollable growth from the year 2006 to 2015 and weighed as much as 80lbs at its heaviest. His penis and testicles remained at normal size but were deluged by his gigantic scrotum.
He spent years living like a prisoner in his own body as he could not move around freely carrying such a heavyweight. For almost as close to 9 years, he was unable to have intercourse with his wife. Besides this, he could not use the toilet to urinate and had to use the shower as he could not aim into the toilet bowl. Dan’s wife, Mindy, was very supportive throughout this difficult phase and helped him with daily tasks.
When the doctors happened to discover this, they were baffled by the rapid growth of Maurer’s scrotum. It was California-based urologist Dr. Joel Gelman who helped Dan with the life-changing operation as he had been suffering from Scrotal Lymphedema. Scrotal elephantiasis, or massive scrotal lymphedema, is a disease that is caused by a barrier, aplasia, or hypoplasia of the lymphatic vessels draining the scrotum. The scrotal skin is thickened and may show evidence of ulcerations in severe cases. It can be either congenital or acquired in nature, with the most familiar acquired etiology being an infection. The most general infections leading to scrotal elephantiasis are lymphogranuloma venereum or filarial infestation with Wuchereria bancrofti. He finally had it operated in the year 2015 by a team of 9 surgeons.
In the month of March, earlier this year, Dan updated all his well-wishers on his GoFundMe page about his current health condition stating he is feeling pretty good and plans on losing more weight and also thanked everyone for giving him a second chance and wished to share this with everyone.
