It’s a proud day for Indian Sports.

Indian athletes Hima Das and Ekta Bhyan wins gold medals in their respective sporting events. The latter also grabbed a bronze medal.

Hima Das, the 18-year-old sprinter bagged the yellow metal after finishing first in the 400m. She clocked 51.46 seconds at the ongoing IAAF World Under-20 Athletics Championships in Tampere, Finland. By doing so, Hima Das has created history by becoming the first Indian to win a gold in the track event of a World Championship.

At the Commonwealth Games 400m final in Gold Coast that took place in April, the Assam girl had clocked an Indian U-20 record of 51.32 second to finish sixth. Since then, Das has gone onto improving her timings. She lowered the National U-20 Record in 400m to 51.13 seconds while winning gold in the recently-concluded National Inter State Championships in Guwahati.

Post-race, Hima Das expressed her happiness and thanked the fans in India while also acknowledging her supporters back in Finland. The athlete got showered with praises by politicians and celebrities which include the likes of Hon’ble PM Narendra Modi, Sports Minister – Rajyavardhan Rathore; Congress President – Rahul Gandhi; Bollywood actors Amitabh Bachchan, Farhan Akhtar; Indian sports legends- Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, P.T. Usha.

In another proud event in Tunisia. India’s Ekta Bhyan won two medals (Gold and Bronze) at the Para Athletics Grand Prix. The para athlete from Haryana won gold in the women’s club throw F51 event and a bronze in the discus throw event.

Ekta had taken up the sport in 2014. Her breakthrough came when she won a gold medal in club throw and a bronze in discus throw at the National Para Athletics Championship in Panchkula, Haryana, in March 2016. Which also helped her secure a berth for the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) sanctioned Para Athletics Grand Prix in Berlin, the same year.

It was Ekta’s brother’s tweet in which he congratulated his sister that caught the media attention.
