THE STATUE OF UNITY is a 182 metres (597 feet) tall statue of one of India’s Independence Movement Leaders Sardar Vallabhai Patel.
The statue of the Iron Man of India is considered as a homage to Sardar Vallabhai Patel’s contributions towards the nation’s independence movements. It is situated on Sadhu Bet island on Narmada river 200 km from Ahmedabad. The project was announced by current Prime Minister Narendra Modi back in 2010, while he was serving as the Chief Minister of Gujarat. The foundation stone for the memorial was laid in 5 years ago in 2013.
The 182-metre statue is the tallest in the world and is double the size of the Statue of Liberty in New York City (93-metres) and four times the size of Christ the Redeemer (38-metres) in Rio de Janeiro, Brasil. 90,000 tonnes of cement and 25,000 tonnes of iron was used in the construction of the statue.
Construction company Larsen and Toubro had earned the tender to build the statue of unity and the total cost can be estimated at around ₹2,389 crore. It is said that nearly 3,400 labourers and 250 engineers worked for 42 months to complete the project. The structure is earthquake proof.
The Statue of Unity will be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 31st October 2018.
