Our general knowledge about paan is that a paan is an appetizer that contains choona, supari, bhola, kattha etc which is wrapped in fresh, green betel leaf. However, the Kohinoor Paan has got some special ingredients. It includes male paan and female paan. The male paan comprises of a Rs 70 lakh per kg musk, agar; a liquid fragrance found only in West Bengal which costs Rs 7 lakh per kg, saffron (Rs 2 lakh/kg), gulab at Rs 80,000 per kg and also some ‘secret ingredients’.

For the women, the goods include gulab, safed musali, a root used as an aphrodisiac costing about Rs 6,000 per kg, a lesser quantity of saffron, etc. And thus, for obvious reasons, the paan costs 5,000 rs per piece.

The ‘Boner’ paan is prepared at meetha paan patta, Kolkata.

There is an interesting story behind the production of the ‘viagra’ paan. Mohammed Sarfuddin Siddiqui, the owner of the 50-year-old Tara Paan Shop, is the creator of this famous paan. In an interview with a news channel he said, “After my marriage, my mother gave me that paan and said you should eat it, and then if you like it, you should sell it,” says Siddiqui who in the past has even exported the Kohinoor paan to countries like Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Dubai. What a story!

Siddiqui revealed that the special paan comes in demand only during weddings. For best results, the paan should be consumed two hours before the desired ‘action’. Another catch about Kohinoor is that, if you are unmarried and still wish to have the paan then you’d get one with less power as he is not in favour of a pre-marital affair.
