It is that time of the year when The British Dance Music Magazine reveals the list of the world’s best DJs, voted by the readers. DJ Mag has been publishing the list of best DJs since 1997. This year’s list of best DJs was announced at the Top 100 DJs Awards ceremony, held at the Amsterdam Arena. Last year we saw some big names such as Tiesto, Armin Van Buuren, Paul Oakenfold, Paul Van Dyk, Martin Garrix, David Guetta, Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, and Hardwell.
Looking back to the year 2017 and the music which kept you going by some of the best artists, here are the top 10 DJs for the year 2017:
Believe it or not, Marshmello is one of a kind. Chris Comstock aka Marshmello is an American EDM producer and DJ. Disguised by the white helmet that flashes and armed with sugary dancefloor dynamite to melt hearts as well as ears, we can say that the Mello’s take on trap, EDM, and electro is anything but mellow.
He started his career by remixing tracks by Jack U and Zedd, later he collaborated with artists like Ookay, Omar LinX, and Jauz. He gained international popularity in January 2017 when he dropped his song “Alone” which appeared on the U.S Billboard Hot 100 chart. His musical style includes synths and bass-heavy EDM.
#9 Steve Aoki:
To anyone else, Steve Aoki’s life is a tropical storm of gigs and travel. It is the business for this EDM superman because of which he is still standing strong in the top ten though he slipped a couple of places in the poll from last year. Steven Hiroyuki Aoki aka Steve Aoki is an American electro house artist, record producer, DJ, and music executive.
This 40-year-old DJ was named as the highest grossing dance artist in North America from tours by Pollstar in 2012. He has collaborated with artists such as Afrojack, LMFAO, Linkin Park, Will.i.am, and Fall out Boy. His best work was Wonderland, which was nominated for Grammy Award for Best Dance/Electronica Album in 2013. In 2017, Aoki did some great collaborations with some hip-hop artists for his fourth album ‘Kolony’. He also remixed Michael Jackson’s classic ‘Thriller’.
He first appeared in this poll back in 2010, within a year Afrojack has catapulted into the top 10. Nick van de Wall aka Afrojack is a Dutch DJ, remixer, record producer from Spijkenisse. At the age of 14, Afrojack started his music career DJ’ing at pubs and local clubs.
He released his first recording under the name Afrojack “In your face” in 2007. But it was “Take Over Control” feat Eva Simons which earned him the international success. In the year 2017, he dropped a new single “Another Life” with fellow DJ David Gutta featuring Ester Dean. He also released “No Tomorrow” featuring Belly, Ricky Breaker, and O.T. Genasis. With all this happening it is amazing he still has time to tour. There is still a lot more for this Dutchman.
#7 David Guetta:
David Guetta has been one of the biggest names in EDM for the last two decades. Whether you are an EDM devotee or an underground raver this 50-year-old DJ has something for you all electro lovers. Pierre David Guetta aka David Guetta is a French DJ, record producer, songwriter, and remixer. He got the mainstream success with his 2009 album One Love which had numbers like “When love takes over”, “Sexy bitch”, and “Memories”. Following this, he dropped an album, ‘Nothing but the Beat’, which had some amazing tracks like “Where them girls at”, “Little Bad Girl”, “Without You”, “Turn me on”, and “Titanium”. The Frenchman was voted number one DJ in 2013, by DJ Mag.
It is his collaborations last year with artists like Bruno Mars on “Versace on the floor’ and four collabs with rapper Nicki Minaj. He is also working with fellow DJ Martin Garrix this year. No wonder we see him on this list of top 10.
#6 The Chainsmokers:
No can transport the colorful, build-and-release template of EDM into a chart-topping formula, it’s The Chainsmokers. Their fusion of dance and pop music with addictive hooks is state of art. The Chainsmokers is an American DJ/Production duo of Alex Pall and Andrew Taggart. They released their debut EP, Bouquet in 2015 which featured the single “Roses”, which trended on top 10 on U.S Billboard Hot 100. But it was “Don’t Let Me Down” which won them the Grammy Award for best dance recording.
In 2017, The Chainsmokers released “Memories do not open” was a smash. They made $ 38 million in just 12 months which placed them third in Forbes DJ rich list. Their ranking in this year’s poll shows that there is a lot more to come from this hit-makers.
He is the Terminator which is the unstoppable machine who may as well say “I will be back” each year after the place is announced in this poll, such is his popularity. Tijs Michiel Verwest aka Tiësto is a Dutch DJ and record producer from Breda. He was named “The Greatest DJ of All Time” by Mixmag magazine.
In 2013, he was voted “Best DJ of the last 20 years” by DJ Mag. From making his debut in 1994, as Da joker with a barrage of gabber, to his latest, the radio-friendly ‘Carry you home’, featuring Stargate and Aloe Blacc, he is the one that artist who kept the popular culture at the forefront.
His third studio album ‘Elements of Life’ was one of his best work as the album reached number one on the Belgian album chart as well as Billboard top electronic albums in the U.S. He also won Grammy Award for best-remixed recoding of John Legend’s hit “All of Me”. There are no doubts why he is known as the ‘Godfather of EDM’ and his presence in this year’s poll.
Hardwell is the EDM’s renaissance man. He is one of those few DJs/Producers who has scaled all the way to the top with two back to back No. 1 wins. Robbert van de Corput aka Hardwell is a Dutch electro house DJ and producer from Breda. He was voted number one DJ by DJ Mag in the year 2013 and 2014.
The 30-year-old DJ is best known for his sets at music festivals, including Ultra Music Festival, Sunburn, and Tomorrowland. “Show me Love vs. Be” gave him the global boost. He released his debut studio album United We Are in the year 2015. He founded a radio show and podcast Hardwell On Air in 2011. In January 2014 Hardwell published the documentary “I Am Hardwell”, which tells the story of his career. Hardwell celebrated 300th edition of his Hardwell On Air radio show.
In 2017, he released his single “Creatures of the Night” featuring Austin Mahone. He achieved high rankings in both streaming and download portals. He also performed at Defqon.1 a Q-Dance music festival. This Dutchman has always been a top contender on the list of top DJs.
#3 Armin van Buuren:
You can learn a thing or two from Armin van Buuren when it comes to long-term success in the list of top 10 DJs. Armin Jozef Jacobus Daniël van Buuren aka Armin van Buuren is a Dutch DJ and producer from South Holland. He is the host of a weekly radio show called A State of Trance which broadcast to more than 37 million weekly listeners in 84 countries on over 100 FM radio stations.
The 41-year-old DJ was ranked the number one DJ by DJ Mag a record five times, four years in a row. He was nominated for the Grammy Award for best dance recording for his single ‘This is what it feels like’ featuring Trevor Guthrie. This makes him the fourth trance artist ever to receive a Grammy nomination. He also holds the records for most entries, 21, on the Billboard dance and electronic albums chart. After 16 years Armin van Buuren is still at the top of his game which is why he holds a strong position in the list of top DJs.
#2 Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike:
Ranked number one in the year 2015, Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike remains in the upper EDM echelons as they are the hardest working men in the big room game. Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike are Belgian DJs and producer duo of brothers Dmitri Thivaios and Michael Thivaios. The duo gained great success in the year 2015, with the release of the highly anticipated track ‘The Hum’ with Ummet Ozcan which was an instant hit. A deep-house track ‘Higher Place’ with artist Ne-You got them going.
Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike has been the face of the global mega-festival, Tomorrowland since 2010. In 2017, the Belgian duo is going strong with collaborations running throughout the year, ‘Complicated’, with fellow DJ David Guetta has been the chill ballad of choice. From big things to big screens the life of this duo of brothers continues to be a madness. They are holding a strong place from past many years in the list of top DJs in the world.
#1 Martin Garrix:
Martin Garrix is busy making history and breaking records. Martijn Gerard Garritsen aka Martin Garrix is a Dutch DJ and record producer. Last year, he made history becoming the youngest ever winner of top 100 DJs poll. Martin is the number one DJ in the world for the second time in a row. He has rapidly climbed the charts over the past few years leaving behind winners such as Armin van Buuren, Tiësto, and Hardwell. Martin received the number one trophy from his inspiration and mentor Tiësto at ADE. After that, he played two sold-out gigs at the RAI in Amsterdam.
The 21-year-old was discovered by the legendary DJ Tiësto. He signed to Spinnin Records in 2012, releasing ‘Error 404’ through the label. His fame rose with his solo release ‘Animals’ which got him the No. 1 spot on Beatport. In the year 2015, he tried his hands on producing progressive house releasing the track ‘Forbidden Voices’. He has also worked with the multi-Grammy winner Ed Sheeran on a track called ‘Rewind Repeat It’. Martin released a track with mentor Tiësto called ‘The only way is up’. In 2017, he released ‘Scared to be alone’ with Brit singing sensation Dua Lipa. The year went great for the Dutch DJ as he also collaborations with artists like David Guetta for ‘So Far Away’ and ‘There for You’ with Troye Sivan.
He is also involved in several charities works using his influence. He is supporting an SOS children’s village in South Africa and has also worked with War Child to raise money for young people affected by conflict. The number one spot for last two years shows how hard the Dutchman is working as he is completely unstoppable.
“It’s a huge honor for me to have been voted No.1 DJ for the second time,” he tells DJ Mag. “I’m just really thankful for all the people who took the time to vote.”
