Disappointment for the Indian shuttle fans as both their hopes— Kidambi Srikanth and PV Sindhu endured defeat in the quarterfinals of the on-going China Open.
Hopes were raised following both stars’ stunning performances in their respective categories yesterday in the pre-quarter rounds. K Srikanth defeated Thailand’s Suppanyu Avihingsanon (21-12 15-21 24-22). Whereas his counterpart, Sindhu got the best out of her opponent, also from Thailand, Busanan Ongbamrungphan (21-23 13-21 18-21).
However, today the shuttlers couldn’t replicate their yesterday’s performances and thus bowed out to their respective opponents. Kidambi Srikanth lost straight sets against the 2nd seeded and Japan’s Kento Momota (9-21 11-21). And a few hours later, PV Sindhu found her exit too. Sindhu got defeated by lower seeded (6th) China’s Yufei Chen (11-21 21-11 15-21).
The duo being done with their campaigns mean India has no more hopes from the tournament. Other Indian players belonging to the group categories (Men’s/Women’s/Mixed Doubles) tasted defeat in the earlier rounds.
Next up is the Korean Open. The tournament will be commencing from 26th of this month. While Srikanth is a strong contender, all eyes would be upon the defending champion, PV Sindhu.
