Few things get us as excited as an off beat biopic. This attempt to re-tell the story of Arunachalam Muruganantham, who revolutionised the concept of menstrual hygiene in rural India by creating a low-cost sanitary napkins machine, looks like a winner.

Padman 1

Here’s why the whole country is keyed up for this extraordinary story about this ordinary man from south.

Twinkle Khanna and ‘the sanitary man of the sacred land’

The film, is based on Twinkle’s ‘Legends of Laxmi Prasad’ which in turn was inspired from Mr Muruganantham himself. And who doesn’t love Twinkle Khanna! She is the queen of satire and let’s face it, no one does fables as funny as her. When a chapter of her hugely successful second book was picked up to make a movie, she jumped at the opportunity to even produce it. So, Padman has Khanna’s magical twinkly touch as well.

Twinkle Khanna with Akshay Kumar, R Balki, Arunachalam and his family.

A phenomenally extraordinary and a socially relevant film about grit and perseverance.

When Arunachalam Muruganantham got married, he realised his wife would collect filthy rags and newspapers to use during her menstrual cycle, as sanitary napkins were very expensive. That began his journey in innovating grass-roots mechanisms for generating awareness about traditional unhygienic practices and beliefs in India. Although he has been ridiculed, written off and downright ostracised in the process, he stuck to his goals, which later got him listed in Time’s Most Influential List in 2014 and was awarded the prestigious Padma Shri in 2016. If there is one giveaway that this film will gift the audience is that perseverance and grit can make mountains move. ‘The sanitary man of the sacred land’ teaches us that there is no idea big or small until you put in everything you have to make it a reality. in a lot of ways, Padman teaches us life lessons, the ones we all need.

Debunking the taboo and fighting against the shame behind periods and pads.

In our society, the uncles and aunties will rely heavily on whatsapp and Facebook but when it comes to menstruation, the normal conversations turns into whispers. This movie is set to break that black balling and start a conversation. A conversation, you can bet a whole lot of women are looking forward to.

Women Empowerment

A movie as women centric as this one will likely spark a nerve and serve towards empowering the women of today. From what it looks like, the trailers are packed with power punch-lines which are applause-worthy and an absolute call of the hour.

To wrap it up, here’s the trailer we all have been talking and tweeting about.
